Donmar Warehouse, a former vat room and hops brewery, is named for the Donmar Productions theatre company formed by Donald Albery in 1953. Albery bought the venue in 1961 as a rehearsal studio, but in 1977, the Royal Shakespeare Company acquired it and turned it into a theatre. It was re-acquired and fully rebuilt by Roger Wingate in 1990, and since then, a series of artistic directors have presented a wide variety of shows in the venue, including many new versions of classic plays and, more recently, UK premieres of new works.
