More information about The Brothers Size

Tarell Alvin McCraney is one of the most celebrated playwrights in the United States: he is a Tony Award nominee for Choir Boy, wrote the story for the Academy Award-winning Moonlight, is the recipient of a Whiting Award and MacArthur “Genius” grant, and won the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award for The Brothers Size. That play now comes off Broadway while revealing the themes that long appear in his works, such as Black masculinity, honor, and more.

In this riveting play, Ogun is the older dutiful brother and Oshoosi, just released from prison, is a bit more freewheeling. Together, the brothers look to chase life, even as the arrival of charismatic Elegba tempts them to stray from their path and revisit old, bad habits. A fable about brotherhood, duty, and freedom, The Brothers Size weaves in storytelling techniques from the Yoruba people of West Africa to create a compelling, theatrical experience.

What to watch for

  • A New York Times review of the play called it an “absorbing and emotionally resonant drama set in the bayou country of Louisiana and loosely based on West African myths.”
  • Brian Tyree Henry, now a Tony and Oscar nominee, performed in an early production of the play.
  • This play is part of The Brother/Sister Plays, a triptych of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s works that explore Black siblings' relationships.
  • While McCraney is a Tony nominee for his Broadway work Choir Boy, he has also been seen across the country at Yale Rep, Berkeley Rep, Steppenwolf, and the Guthrie.
