Tarell Alvin McCraney is one of the most celebrated playwrights in the United States: he is a Tony Award nominee for Choir Boy, wrote the story for the Academy Award-winning Moonlight, is the recipient of a Whiting Award and MacArthur “Genius” grant, and won the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award for The Brothers Size. That play now comes off Broadway while revealing the themes that long appear in his works, such as Black masculinity, honor, and more.
In this riveting play, Ogun is the older dutiful brother and Oshoosi, just released from prison, is a bit more freewheeling. Together, the brothers look to chase life, even as the arrival of charismatic Elegba tempts them to stray from their path and revisit old, bad habits. A fable about brotherhood, duty, and freedom, The Brothers Size weaves in storytelling techniques from the Yoruba people of West Africa to create a compelling, theatrical experience.
Oscar winner and Tony nominee Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight, Choir Boy) brings to The Shed The Brothers Size, a moving and theatrical look at two brothers post-incarceration. One upright and the other volatile, the brothers are tempted back to bad habits by a charismatic visitor in this play that blends Deep South realism and African folklore.
The Brothers Size runs for 1hr 30min. No intermission.
