The home of the United States Naval Academy and a central point of the American Revolution. Once called the “Athens of America”, Annapolis was settled in 1649 by Puritan exiles from Virginia. The community had a series of names, including Providence and Anne Arundel Town, until finally named Annapolis in 1694 in honor of Princess Anne of England. Annapolis’s fantastic location along the world-famous Chesapeake Bay has enabled it to be a prime location for fishing and boating.
