About The Lonely Few

Get The Lonely Few tickets and rock out with some of the best musical theatre actors in New York, including Tony Award® winner Lauren Patten, Taylor Iman Jones, and Tony Award® nominee Damon Daunno. A queer love story and new musical about how far we’ll go to chase our dreams, this play by Zoe Sarnak and Rachel Bonds comes to MCC Theater for a limited Off-Broadway run. Don't miss your chance to see this world premiere from exciting young voices.

Experience The Lonely Few in New York to be transported to Kentucky, where Lila and her band The Lonely Few perform at a modest, local venue, Paul’s Juke Joint. Their steady gig is going well until an established musician, Amy, shows up and offers the band the chance to tour on the road. Love blooms between Lila and Amy as they chase their dreams, but soon the band, enjoying the open road, also longs for something more familiar.

More information about The Lonely Few

The Lonely Few brings together a few of today’s most exciting musical theatre performers for a queer love story. Lauren Patten rocked out to “You Oughta Know” in Jagged Little Pill and earned a Tony Award nomination for her role, and her co-star in this show, Taylor Iman Jones, originated roles in Head Over Heels and Groundhog Day on Broadway.

In a time when some theatres are presenting smaller shows over bigger musicals, MCC is having an exciting musical-heavy season. The Lonely Few follows MCC’s production of The Connector by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, and now this musical introduces exciting young talent making their mark on the musical theatre scene: there’s composer and lyricist Zoe Sarnak (who has two major musicals bowing this spring, The Lonely Few plus the Raúl Esparza-led Galileo at Berkeley Rep) and bookwriter Rachel Bonds (who made a splash with the critically acclaimed play Jonah this season).

MCC is known for its shows that often transfer to Broadway (like Hand to God) or go on to win a Pulitzer Prize (like Wit), so experiencing a new musical like The Lonely Few offers a unique chance to see a show before it gets big.

What to watch for

  • This musical offers an immersive element for more curious audience members: like with the original production of Spring Awakening, there will be on-stage seating for certain audiences at The Lonely Few. Step into Paul’s Juke Joint for a more up-close-and-personal experience.
  • The Lonely Few features two directors who have each worked on major recent musicals: Trip Cullman staged Unknown Soldier at Playwrights Horizons, and Ellenore Scott choreographed Funny Girl and Mr. Saturday Night on Broadway.
  • Sarnak is having a moment: she recently won the Jonathan Larson Award for musical theatre writing and also has a musical going up at Berkeley Rep this spring starring four-time Tony Award nominee Raúl Esparza.
  • Bonds’s 2024 play Jonah ran at Roundabout Theatre Company and was a Critic’s Pick in The New York Times.
