More information about Wine in the Wilderness

Born in 1916, Alice Childress was one of America's most prolific African American female dramatists: the great-great-granddaughter of a slave, Childress chronicled the modern Black experience in New York. She wrote and produced plays for four decades straight in the 1900s, becoming one of that century's most well-known writers. Nonetheless, systemic racism in the American theatre and broader culture limited her fame. A dynamic and fearless writer, Childress often addressed racism head-on in her plays, which often made them unstageable at the time. Producers told her to tame one of her most famous works, Trouble in Mind, by downplaying its themes.

Nonetheless, Childress stayed true to herself and wrote bold plays that caught fire after her death in 1994. She won the Drama Desk Harold S. Prince Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022 but also enjoyed literary success during her lifetime, winning the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award and receiving an honorable mention in 1982 for the Coretta Scott King Award. Today, theatres are rediscovering and appreciating Childress's texts, which continue to resonate and shed a light on race relations within the arts community.
