About Autumn Royal

May and Timothy are looking after the father who has long since taken ill to bed. Their own lives are on hold and they’re not getting any younger. Should they stay and help? Or is it time for them to move on?

This dark comedy set on the northside of Cork city is about life and death, love and hate, jealousy, rage, horror, and homicidal notions – just a normal play about a family.

Kevin Barry is the multi-award-winning writer of the novels Beatlebone and City Of Bohane, and the story collections Dark Lies The Island, and There Are Little Kingdoms. Autumn Royal is his first piece written originally for stage and was acclaimed by critics and the public alike during its world premiere run at The Everyman, Cork in 2017.

Irish Repertory Theatre is delighted to reopen the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage with this North American premiere.

More information about Autumn Royal

Kevin Barry’s dark comedy Autumn Royal makes its North American premiere at the Irish Repertory Theatre, opening the venue’s fall 2021 season. Get Autumn Royal tickets on TodayTix.

Autumn Royal is a play that follows May and Timothy, two adult siblings still living in their childhood home taking care of their bedridden father. Stuck in Cork, Ireland, they dream of picking their lives back up and getting away (Timothy, to Australia) — if they can only get rid of their dad. The two plan to drop him off at a nursing home, but even when they become freer physically, they’re haunted by memories of their family’s past that make it emotionally difficult to escape the house.

The show played its first-ever engagements in Ireland in 2017 and 2018, and the production of Autumn Royal in New York marks the play's North American debut. Ciarán O’Reilly directs, with Maeve Higgins and John Keating starring as May and Timothy.

What to Watch For

  • Autumn Royal is Kevin Barry’s first original stage play. He is best known for his career as a novelist, which includes the award-winning works Beatlebone and City Of Bohane.
  • Autumn Royal premiered at The Everyman in Cork, Ireland, the very city where the play is set.
  • Barry counts Harold Pinter, Gore Vidal, Brain Friel, and Simon Stephens among his influences as a writer. The latter (Stephens) also has a new play premiering in New York in fall 2021: Morning Sun at New York City Center.
  • Barry got the initial idea for Autumn Royal when he saw two women conversing on the street. One suddenly clutched her throat in surprise, “the traditional Cork woman’s expression of shock.” From this gesture he built the personality of May and wrote a monologue for her, and the rest of the elements followed.
