AIN'T TOO PROUD is the electrifying new musical that charts the rise of the legendary R&B vocal group, fueled by the signature dance moves and silky-smooth harmonies that propelled them to the top of the charts an astounding 14 times. The story of brotherhood, family, loyalty and betrayal touches on the personal and political conflicts that surfaced as civil unrest gripped the country, but shows how the group prevailed, going on to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the strength of such unforgettable songs as “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” and many more.

After record-breaking engagements in Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, the unforgettable, untold story of this legendary quintet arrives on Broadway.

Get ready, ‘cause here they come! The Temptations took the world by storm in the 1960s and ’70s with their soulful sound and bold take on social issues, and they take center stage in “Ain’t Too Proud.” Otis Williams, the founder and last surviving original member of the Motown vocal group who still owns the group’s name and tours with The Temptations (a group that has seen 24 members over the course of six decades), spearheads the new musical, conceived by director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo.

Derrick Baskin plays Williams in the new musical, and he is joined by James Harkness (Paul Williams), Jawan M. Jackson (Melvin Franklin), Jeremy Pope (Eddie Kendricks), and Ephraim Sykes (David Ruffin). The R&B quintet take on iconic hits such as “Get Ready,” “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” and, of course, the title track “Ain't Too Proud to Beg” — not to mention various chart-toppers from the Motown era.

What to watch for

The musical will have played four developmental productions before coming to Broadway, including stops at Berkeley Repertory Theater in California, the Kennedy Center in DC, Center Theater Group in LA, and The Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto.

Director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo previously collaborated on the jukebox musicals “Jersey Boys,” featuring the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” featuring the music of Donna Summer.

Playwright Dominique Morisseau, who wrote the book, is from Detroit, where The Temptations got together in 1960.

“Ain’t Too Proud” is the latest jukebox musical to hit Broadway, following shows such as “Head Over Heels,” “Escape to Margaritaville,” “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” “On Your Feet!,” and “Motown: The Musical.”
