This final operatic masterpiece by Richard Strauss and Clemens Krauss from 1942 tells the story of Countess Madeleine who is being courted by two different men; Flamand the composer and Olivier the poet. Set in 18th century Paris, this lyrical and romantic work explores which is more important for opera – the words or the music – an age-old question about the nature of our artform.
The company is proud to welcome a now legendary Strauss conductor Simone Young AM and a wonderful cast in a unique collaboration with the Australian National Academy of Music in what will be an operatic highlight for Melbourne.
