About James Conlon and the Music of Zemlinksy and Grant Still

Join us for an evening of extraordinary music and “lost” masterworks. This concert is presented as part of the Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices that encourages greater awareness and more frequent performances of music by composers whose careers and lives were disrupted or ended during the years of the Nazi regime in Europe.

James Conlon, LA Opera Music Director, curates an evening of works by Alexander Zemlinsky and William Grant Still, inspired by LA Opera’s upcoming double feature; Highway 1, USA & The Dwarf. Featuring performances by the remarkable young artists of the Colburn School and LA Opera Young Artist program, the concert includes a string quartet by Alexander Zemlinsky, art songs of William Grant Still, and Zemlinsky’s pinnacle song cycle Maeterlinck Lieder.

Maestro Conlon, whose pre-performance lectures have become events almost as highly anticipated as his musical presentations, will discuss historical and anecdotal information about the music, composers, and culture of the time prior to the start of the performance.
