More information about Into the Woods

Following its debut at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 1986, Into the Woods premiered on Broadway in 1987. The hit musical won three Tony Awards, including for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. Into the Woods went on to have a US tour and runs on the West End in London. Multiple revivals of the play popped up in Los Angeles, London, and on Broadway. The 2022 revival, directed by Lear deBessonet, won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

In 2014, James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim adapted their musical masterpiece Into the Woods into a film. The Disney remake stars Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, James Corden, and Chris Pine. Lapine and Sondheim have collaborated on other Broadway works, including Sunday in the Park with George and Passion, which both earned multiple awards.

What to Watch For

  • The current revival of Into the Woods honors composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who died in November 2021. Sondheim was highly influential in the theatre world, known for his work on celebrated musicals like West Side Story and Sweeney Todd. The 2022 Into the Woods revival is a tribute to Sondheim’s legacy.
  • Into the Woods intertwines the stories of several infamous fairy tale characters into one musical, including Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, among many others!
  • From the fable “Jack and the Beanstalk,” Jack’s cow Milky White comes to life as a puppet in this revival. Initially a mere set piece, Milky White now walks around the stage, breathes, and even shows emotion through body language. Equipped with a bungee cord spine and a lever to open and close her mouth, Milky White enchants audiences and earns her place as a staple of the show.
  • A performance from the original Into the Woods cast was filmed in 1989. PBS aired the musical performance in March of 1991 as a part of its anthological series, “American Playhouse.” A revival performance of Into the Woods at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre was also taped in 2010 and released in 2011.
