Beetlejuice on Broadway

BEETLEJUICE is back on Broadway, and we can finally say the three words we love most: It's showtime... again! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book, an astonishing set, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under, to be exact), it’s a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O!

Say it three times, and Tony Award-nominated School of Rock actor Alex Brightman will appear onstage as the titular character in the musical adaptation of the 1988 comedy classic Beetlejuice, now being resurrected on Broadway for a second run. Featuring a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King and a score by Eddie Perfect, the Beetlejuice musical, helmed by Alex Timbers, is adapted from the Tim Burton film of the same name, which fuses the worlds of the living and the dead. When Lydia and her parents purchase a new home, the young girl soon discovers that it’s haunted by its previous owners — and Betelgeuse has been summoned to help scare them away. Lucky for Lydia, she’s totally obsessed with “the whole being dead thing” and finds a new friend in the spirit who’s risen from six feet under.

Recommended for ages 10 and up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

What to Watch For

• When Beetlejuice first opened on Broadway on April 25, 2019, songwriter Eddie Perfect was represented twice in the 2018-19 theatrical season. He debuted on Broadway with King Kong in November 2018.
• Book writers Scott Brown and Anthony King made their Broadway debuts with Beetlejuice, but neither are new to theatre. Brown is a former theatre critic for New York magazine, and King is the former artistic director of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater.
• Director Alex Timbers, who also helmed the Tony-winning Best Musical Moulin Rouge! The Musical, has been attached to Beetlejuice for more than 10 years.
• The title character’s name is actually spelled Betelgeuse after the star in the Orion constellation, but for advertising purposes for the original film, Beetlejuice was spelled phonetically.
• The original Broadway run was forced to close early due to the pandemic, but the Beetlejuice musical had gained an enthusiastic fanbase on social media that advocated for the musical's return. It all started when the cast posted TikToks from backstage, and soon, the musical was hosting costume contests, giveaways, and more for followers of its official social media accounts!
