About Tru
Don’t miss Tony Award-winning Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Truman Capote in Tru, Jay Presson Allen’s one-man drama at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Book Tru tickets on TodayTix.
Set during Christmas 1975, Tru is a play about what happens after Truman Capote is left to his own devices after publishing material that exposed the lives of people within his powerful, elite social network. Truman, once a celebrated guest amongst New York’s most powerful, is now dealing with the terrible consequences of leaking their secrets through his literature.
From his apartment, Capote has the opportunity to reflect on his career, his fame, and the loneliness that has overcome him. The play also confronts his struggles with alcoholism and addiction while managing to hang onto the sharp humour that made him such a talented and fascinating public figure.
Best known for playing Mitchell Pritchett in Modern Family, Ferguson brings the role to the stage in a production directed by Rob Ashford.

Phenomenal! Acting was spectacular
The acting and setting are phenomenal. The story is very basic and if you already know a little bit about Truman Capote, you won’t learn anything new. Excellent performance but the content is too basic to be engaging.

More information about Tru
Tru premiered on Broadway in 1989 with Robert Morse in the role of Truman Capote. Morse’s performance earned him the 1990 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play, and the production ran for nearly 300 performances.
Playwright Jay Presson Allen assembled the piece from Capote’s own writing and words. Allen was also an acclaimed screenwriter whose credits included adaptations of Cabaret and The Prince of Tides.
Tru in London depicts the aftermath of Capote’s publication of the chapters from his unfinished novel Answered Prayers. Many of his wealthy female friends, sometimes collectively referred to as ‘Swans,’ recognised themselves in his writing and completely cut ties with him. Capote never completed the book before his death in 1984.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson first performed in this revival in New York in 2026 at the House of the Redeemer. Rob Ashford now brings the same production to London for Ferguson’s Menier Chocolate Factory debut.
What to watch for
- Morse won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his 1992 performance in the American Playhouse presentation of Tru.
- Jay Presson Allen was nominated twice for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
- Capote got recognition for his early works in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in 1936.
- The novel that Capote claimed to have been destroyed was found and published in 2005 under the title Summer Crossing.
