About Martin Guerre

Don’t miss Martin Guerre, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s reimagined musical about identity, deception, and love for its five-week run at The Old Vic. Book Martin Guerre tickets on TodayTix.

Martin Guerre is a musical set in 16th-century France, where Martin Guerre disappears from his village and leaves his young wife Bertrande behind. Many years later, a man returns claiming to be Martin, and the community welcomes him back into his old life with open arms.

But doubts begin to emerge regarding his identity, and as questions bubble up, Bertrande finds herself caught between the man in front of her and the expectations of her community, all while juggling the complicated truth about Martin’s sudden return.

Liv Andrusier stars as Bertrande, with Alex James-Hatton and Shane O’Riordan sharing the role of Martin. Colin Ryan, Barney Wilkinson, Caroline Sheen, Mathew Craig, Aaron Lee Lambert, and Adam Pearce join them in the company.

It was a joy and unexpected, and seeing it in the round was special.

This show was beautiful and intimate, and the music was very romantic. It was easy to understand the plot without being familiar with it beforehand, and the show felt like the perfect length.

I absolutely loved it! The story was clear, the music and voices so beautiful, the minimal set design and lighting did a great job making a period piece feel contemporary and immersive. The acting and direction were also brilliant, and the great venue, of course.

More information about Martin Guerre

Martin Guerre in London first opened at London’s Prince Edward Theatre in 1996 and went on to win the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Three decades later, creators Boublil and Schönberg have returned to the material to make some major renovations.

The musical draws inspiration from one of France’s most famous cases of identity fraud. The real Martin Guerre disappeared from his village in the 16th century, and another man, Arnaud du Tilh, later assumed his identity and lived with Guerre’s wife before the deception eventually made its way to court.

For this new stage version, Boublil and Schönberg have reshaped the score with new, folk-influenced music. Boublil, Annabel Mutale Reed, and Paul Hodge provide new lyrics for the production as well.

Directed by Matthew Warchus, this reimagined Martin Guerre is presented in the round as a semi-staged production, giving audiences the exciting chance to see a substantially reworked version of this musical.

What to watch for

  • The original production won two Olivier Awards for Best New Musical and Best Theatre Choreographer.
  • Martin Guerre went on a North American tour from 1999 to 2000 in cities such as Detroit, Washington, and Los Angeles.
  • Matthew Warchus has won an Olivier Award for his work on Matilda.
  • Director Matthew Warchus received a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for God of Carnage.
