Electra/Persona is a play that brings together two stories about women whose identities have been changed by grief. In Sophocles’ Electra, a daughter remains fixated on avenging her murdered father, awaiting her brother’s return home to help her carry out her act of revenge.
The production then shifts into the psychological world of Ingmar Bergman’s Persona, where an actress named Elisabeth abruptly stops speaking, and Alma, the woman in charge of caring for her, becomes sucked into an unsettling relationship in which the boundaries between the two women quickly dwindle.
Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss lead the cast, alternating between Electra and Elisabeth or Clytemnestra and Alma during the run. Ella Lily Hyland and Patrick Robinson also appear in the company.
Written and directed by Benedict Andrews, this show uses two different worlds to examine the nature of grief and identity as lines blur and emotions take over.

Benedict Andrews developed Electra/Persona through his longstanding creative connections with Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss. Rather than building the project around one actor assigned to a particular character, Andrews designed the show so its two leads could seamlessly exchange parts and experience the story from different perspectives.
The pairing of Sophocles and Bergman gives Andrews another point of connection to explore. Bergman worked in both theatre and cinema, and Persona was created during a period when he was leading Stockholm’s Royal Dramatic Theatre. Andrews uses this intersection as part of the foundation for his new theatrical adaptation.
Electra/Persona in London also features an original score by Academy Award-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, set design by Magda Willi, costume design by Merle Hensel, lighting design by Jon Clark, sound design by Brendan Aanes, and video design by Ash J Woodward.
