About The Lives of Others

Don’t miss The Lives of Others, an Oscar-winning story of surveillance and that which was never meant to be revealed, now reimagined for the West End by Robert Icke and starring Keira Knightley. Book The Lives of Others tickets on TodayTix.

The Lives of Others is a play set in 1984 East Germany, where a writer and his actress lover are placed under state surveillance by the Stasi. Their apartment is wired so that every movement and conversation can be overheard and cataloged. Listening from the attic above them is Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler, a man who is trained to observe without becoming emotionally involved. However, the longer he stays, the more he becomes absorbed into the lives of the people living beneath him, and his detachment begins to slip from his fingers.

What follows is a psychologically charged drama where politics and morality become impossible to separate, putting Wiesler in a most difficult conundrum. Opening at the Adelphi Theatre for a limited run, The Lives of Others turns a modern classic into a major theatrical event.
