RENT first premiered on Broadway 30 years ago and went on to win major awards, such as the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It’s greatly inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème. Jonathan Larson’s musical relocates the story to New York City’s East Village; however, it follows a group of friends living through the HIV/AIDS crisis.
RENT in London is inspired by Luke Sheppard’s 2020 staging at Hope Mill Theatre and revisits the musical on a larger scale for the Duke of York’s Theatre, with Sheppard as the director. Choreography is by Tom Jackson Greaves, set design is by David Woodhead, costume design is by Gabriella Slade, lighting design is by Howard Hudson, and audio production and sound design is by Paul Gatehouse.
With Gaten Matarazzo leading the cast as Mark, further casting has yet to be announced. This anniversary production positions RENT as both a major musical event and a star-led West End revival.
