After delighting audiences across the country, the smash-hit, joyful play based on the best-selling novel is back with a celebration of friendship, kindness and compassion.
There used to be an empty chair at the back of the class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it. He’s nine years old (just like me), but he’s very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite!
After learning that he has fled his own war-torn country, Ahmet’s classmates have ‘The Greatest Idea in the World’ – a magnificent plan to reunite Ahmet with his family.
Told from a child’s perspective, balancing heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class highlights the power of good friends and courage in a world that doesn’t always make sense and reminds us that everyone needs a place to call home.
Based on the book by Onjali Q. Raúf, adapted for the stage by Nick Ahad and directed by Monique Touko. A Children’s Theatre Partnership and Rose Theatre production.

Good family show based on a rich story
Really powerful and amazing acting!
The Boy at the Back of the Class is a beautiful adaptation of a book about a young person trying to befriend their classmate Ahmet, a refugee from Syria. I first read the book a couple of years ago, and, recognising the title, booked a ticket to the show on a whim the night before an 11:30am showing. Needless to say, I was more than pleasantly surprised at how polished every movement was, especially within the central friendship group, while still managing to effectively portray children; the pacing that was quick enough to keep the (mostly adolescent) audience interested, but also slowed down to let them contemplate bigger questions and topics; and the minimal-yet-perfectly appropriate and functional(!!) set design. Whilst targeted mostly to children, I think that many adults could get something out of this show - not just for the genuinely wonderful acting, direction, lighting and sound design, and staging - but also to challenge their current political opinions by seeing them through the eyes of a child.
