About Arcadia

Don’t miss Arcadia, known to be Tom Stoppard’s greatest play, in this stunning revival directed by Carrie Cracknell (The Grapes of Wrath). Book Arcadia tickets on TodayTix.

Arcadia in London spans two centuries in a Derbyshire country home and masterfully blends themes of romance, humour, history, and maths. In the 19th century, a genius of a teenage girl begins to unravel mathematics while the nearest trusted adult is undone by his own passions. In the present, scholars are still trying to uncover traces of that story, hoping to figure out what truly happened so long ago.

This brilliant production boasts an incredible cast, including Isis Hainsworth as Thomasina Coverly, Seamus Dillane as Septimus Hodge, Leila Farzad as Hannah Jarvis, and Prasanna Puwanarajah as Bernard Nightingale, as well as Gabriel Akuwudike, Fiona Button, Angus Cooper, Tim Frances, Holly Godliman, William Lawlor, Colin Mace, and Matthew Steer.

More information about Arcadia

This smashing production will mark the first time Tom Stoppard’s timeless masterpiece has been staged at The Old Vic, where Carrie Cracknell has expertly revived it for the stage. Arcadia is a play that first premiered in 1993, quickly becoming what is arguably Stoppard’s most celebrated work. The play is admired for its masterful writing and ability to make every moment feel alive.

This new production also brings together a rich creative team, including set design by Alex Eales, costume design by Suzanne Cave, lighting by Guy Hoare, sound by Donato Wharton, and music by Stuart Earl.

This version of Arcadia is loyal to the heart of the story, drawing on themes of passion, the search for truth, and a deep human connection that spans a great length of time.

What makes this show endure the test of time is the way it so beautifully balances intellectualism with emotion. This staging of Arcadia leans into that with elegance, giving space for the show’s humour while never overshadowing the aching heart that lies beneath it.

What to watch for

  • Arcadia won the Laurence Olivier Award in 1993 for Best New Play.
  • In 2009, Tom Stoppard’s son Ed acted in Arcadia, taking on the role of Valentine Coverly.
  • Lord Byron deeply inspired Arcadia after Stoppard read a biography about the poet.
  • Lord Byron is central to the mystery of Arcadia, but he is never portrayed on stage.
