Sweetmeats is a play by Karim Khan (Brown Boys Swim) that tells the story of Hema and Liaquat, South Asian elders that met in a type 2 diabetes course. Between checking blood sugar levels, metformin, and managing their health, the two embark on an unexpected love story.
“I wanted to centre a generation of South Asians that we rarely see on our stages - our elders - and make them the main characters of their own love story,” Khan said.
Starring in this brilliant new play are Shobu Kapoor (EastEnders) as Hema and Rehan Sheikh (Inkaar) as Liaquat.

What It Feels Like
- Gently moving
- Warmly humorous
- Culturally resonant
You’ll Love This If…
- You appreciate stories about older generations finding love
- You enjoy intimate two-hander productions with strong performances
- You value seeing South Asian experiences authentically represented on stage
A tender, heartfelt play that filled me up with emotions and strongly grounded me in my Asian identity. The characters were deeply relatable as they used food, humour, and grief, to explore themes of loss, health, and the possibility of joy. The story takes us through the romance experienced by two older British Asians who meet at a diabetes clinic, and it has a gentle, love-filled tone that kept me deeply engaged the whole time.
Sweet, sentimental story. Heartwarming and funny.
Great sets. Pace was slow with lots of silence.

This brand new play comes to Bush Theatre as a co-production with Tara Theatre, and it is directed by Tara Theatre Artistic Director Natasha Kathi-Chandra.
"It is necessary and urgent to expand the canon of British Theatre to include more than one type of South Asian story. This was the driving force of my first season as Artistic Director at Tara Theatre- to platform a variety of voices in order to make this a reality. For this final show, we look at two older voices from the diaspora communities living in the UK, inviting audiences into the rich journeys of their lives,” Kathi-Chandra said.
