About Maggots

Don’t miss Maggots, an impactful play by Tony Craze Award winner Farah Najib at the Bush Theatre. Book Maggots tickets on TodayTix.

See the talented cast, including Safiyya Ingar, who is best known for appearing in two seasons of Netflix’s The Witcher, Sam Baker Jones, who plays Jack Grealish in the BBC’s Dear England, and Marcia Lecky, who is known for many projects, including roles in EastEnders and Ted Lasso.

Together, the cast tells the story of a group of lonely neighbours who are forced to blur the boundaries of their private lives when a stench in the building worsens, and the housing association does little to help. Together, they must face their fears and concerns, and in doing so, a community begins to form in the face of a tragic situation.

As Farah Najib said of the play, “If even one person leaves the theatre and decides to check in on someone they haven’t heard from in a while, that’d make me really happy.”

More information about Maggots

Maggots in London has an excellent creative team, including direction by Jess Barton, set and costume design by Caitlin Wawhinney, lighting design by Peter Small, composing and sound design by Duramaney Kamara, and it is produced by Jessie Anand Productions.

As Barton said, “I was immediately drawn to the storytelling nature of this script and Farah’s nuanced observations of human behaviour! We’re not subtle at Fight or Flight about our fascination with people, and what contributes to a person’s identity, so having the opportunity to explore this in a completely new way felt very exciting.”

Maggots is a play that was staged at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre for a brief run at the beginning of 2024. The production was immediately a hit. As the London Pub Theatres review said, “Full of pathos and quiet fury, this play will crawl under your skin and feast on your conscience.”

What to watch for

  • Maggots was originally the working title for the play, but as Farah Najib delved deeper into the project, the title seemed to fit.
  • Farah Najib is an alumna of both the Royal Court Writers Group (2019-20) and the Soho Theatre Writers’ Lab (2020).
  • Aspects of this play are reminiscent of the real-life story of a woman whose body was discovered in 2022 in a South London block of flats, having been unnoticed for years.
  • Farah Najib’s play, Dirty Dogs was longlisted for the 2022 Bruntwood Prize.
