As identities become blurry and emotions ebb and flow, desire gives way to mayhem and outrageous comedy.

Twelfth Night in London boasts a formidable creative team, including music by Matt Maltese, set and costume design by James Cotterill, lighting design by Zoe Spurr and Bethany Gupwell, and sound design by George Dennis.

With brilliant design, original music, and a cast led by Freema Agyeman, Michael Grady-Hall, Gwyneth Keyworth, Samuel West, and Daniel Monks, this smashing reimagining of Twelfth Night is poignant and full of heart.

More information about Twelfth Night

This new staging of Twelfth Night is fresh off a sold-out run in Stratford-upon-Avon. This production brings great new energy to Shakespeare’s beloved comedy by leaning into its emotional vulnerability. Director Prasanna Puwanarajah’s staging of the show treats Illyria as a world where performance takes precedence. Characters hide behind false identities and facades as they yearn for connection, folks mistreat one another, and lies are told despite the hope for great love.

Original music by Matt Maltese is woven seamlessly throughout the production, heightening the already strong themes of longing and joy. The result, ultimately, is a Twelfth Night that feels both closely intimate and deeply expansive, allowing humour to land while giving room for the play’s quiet truths.

Twelfth Night is a play with an ensemble cast that delivers rich, detailed performances. Whether you were a fan of Twelfth Night already or are just seeing it for the first time, this production promises audiences a good laugh and the ability to reflect on what it means to be human.

What to watch for

  • Viola is easily one of Shakespeare’s most famous roles of disguise. Her gender-bending has been central to the show since its very first performances.
  • Twelfth Night actually refers to the twelfth night after Christmas, a holiday known as ‘Epiphany Eve.’
  • The first time Twelfth Night was adapted for film was in 1910.
  • Twelfth Night has been worked into musicals several times, including in Your Own Thing (1968), Music Is (1977), and All Shook Up (2005).
