Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts (August: Osage County, Killer Joe) is bringing his brilliant drama Mary Page Marlowe to London for the very first time. Staged at the Old Vic, this intimate and emotionally compelling play follows the life of a so-called ‘ordinary’ Ohio woman, with five separate actors playing different roles in her life.
Susan Sarandon is making her UK theatre debut, joined by Andrea Riseborough, making her first appearance on stage in fifteen years. They will both be embodying Mary at different ages, with the broader ensemble cast playing out 11 time-jumping scenes.
Alongside a formidable cast, this production also boasts an incredible creative team, including director Matthew Warchus (Matilda the Musical), scene and costume design by Rob Howell, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone, and sound design by Simon Baker.

Having premiered at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre before moving Off-Broadway, Mary Page Marlowe makes its UK premiere in a newly reconfigured Old Vic this autumn, to audiences eagerly anticipating this incredible show.
Playwright Tracy Letts invites audiences to piece together Mary’s life story the same way that we do ours: out of sequence and tinged by memory. What emerges at the end of this exquisite performance is a portrait of a woman and a mother of two from Ohio who is both so ordinary and so deeply complex, just as we all are.
“I’m so honoured to be asked to be in a play during Matthew Warchus’s final season at the Old Vic,” Susan Sarandon commented to The Guardian.
Andrea Riseborough, also spoke to The Guardian, saying, “It’s an honour to be taking on the role of Mary – amongst others – in Tracy Letts’ poignant play, alongside the extraordinary Susan Sarandon. I’m so very grateful to be working with Matthew again and thrilled to finally work at the Old Vic, a beautiful space.”
