In Every Brilliant Thing, a young child seeks to cheer up their mother following a suicide attempt—they decide to create a list of all the reasons life is worth living. Both silly and profound, the list encompasses everything from water fights to inappropriate songs played at emotional moments. As the child grows up, the list grows with them as well.
This one-actor show includes audience participation and involvement, which lends itself well to impacting audiences as the show explores just how far we will go to help those that we love.
Since this show features only one character, the cast will perform in rotation. The cast includes Lenny Henry, Ambika Mod, Sue Perkins, Jonny Donahoe (the show’s original co-creator), and Minnie Driver.

Every Brilliant Thing is a play by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe. The show began as a stand-alone monologue that Macmillan wrote. Through the development of George Perrin, as well as the addition of Donahoe, it became the masterpiece it is today.
Every Brilliant Thing in London has an expert creative team, including co-direction by Jeremy Herrin and Duncan Macmillan, set and costume designer Vicki Mortimer, lighting designer Jack Knowles, and sound designer Tom Gibbons.
This interactive play premiered over a decade ago at the Edinburgh Fringe and was an immediate hit. Since then, it’s been staged numerous times worldwide.
In 2024, the show returned to the Fringe. The Times 5-star review said, “The script is rich with theatrical innovation, even ten years on. And seeing it now adds a sense of reflection. Suicide is still reported carelessly. Too much focus is still placed on the “why” and “how." There is no quick fix for depression, but among all the darkness Macmillan and Donahoe’s script bathes in the everyday joys.”
Don’t miss the West End debut of the beloved dramatic comedy, Every Brilliant Thing. Both silly and serious, this play centres on a child creating a list of all the things that make life worth living. This is a powerful tale of depression and the lengths we go to for the ones we love.

Every Brilliant Thing was a smash hit when it premiered over a decade ago, and it’s since been a beloved theatre mainstay. With audience interaction and participation, it’s kept fresh and new. As The Times said, “The prospect of audience interaction can send people into panic. But here it feels as though we are part of one communal effort. Where the script stops and people’s personal offerings start becomes progressively hazy. Voices shout out joyously from all around the theatre’s edge.”
