Be transported to a town where everyone wakes up deaf following the tragic shooting of a deaf boy who couldn’t hear the orders he inadvertently disobeyed. This is a powerful tale of war, humanity, and collective resistance.
Deaf Republic in London has an excellent cast, including Romel Belcher (A Doll’s House), Caoimhe Coburn Gray (Two Hundred Deer to Every Lion), Derbhle Crotty (The Alice Trilogy), Kate Finegan (Dream Factory), Eoin Gleeson (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), and Lisa Kelly (My Mother Said I Never Should).
The ensemble unites deaf and hearing actors, aerial performers, puppetry, live cinema and poetry. Together, they use spoken English, British Sign Language (BSL), silence, and creative captioning to tell this impactful story.

Deaf Republic is a play written and directed by Bush Moukarzel and Ben Kidd, the co-directors and co-writers of Dead Centre. Dead Centre is a theatre company based between Dublin and London; they’re known for productions such as The Education of Rudolf Steiner, Illness as Metaphor, and Good Sex.
The creative team also includes co-writer Zoë McWhinney (Anthony and Cleopatra), designer Jeremy Herbert (Alice Trilogy), costume designer Mae Leahy (The Misanthrope), lighting designer Azusa Ono (A Mirror), composer and sound designer Kevin Gleeson (The Weir), and video director Grant Gee (Orlando).
Deaf Republic, the book by Ilya Kaminsky, was an instant sensation, earning numerous awards and nominations, including being a Finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
