About Good Night, Oscar

Take a step back in time to 1958 to the bustling set of the live television show "The Tonight Show with Jack Paar." Over the course of a single episode with pianist and humourist Oscar Levant as the guest, the audience watches Hollywood's first celebrity meltdown. "There's a fine line between genius and insanity; I have erased this line," says Levant.

"It's thrilling to be making my West End debut at the Barbican this summer with* Good Night, Oscar*," Hayes said in a statement. "I'm eager to introduce one of the all-time greats, Oscar Levant, to the U.K. The response we received on Broadway was incredible, and I'm hoping British audiences will appreciate the history of this fascinating man—a multi-faceted pioneer, from concert pianist to infamous raconteur. It's an honor to bring this production to London."

More information about Good Night, Oscar

Good Night, Oscar is a play that premiered on Broadway in 2023, and it was an immediate hit with critics and audiences. It earned three Tony Award nominations, and Sean Hayes won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.

As the Variety review said of the show, “Though the play is filled with 1950s references (nods to Jayne Mansfield, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Henny Youngman and Dorothy Parker will likely be lost on some), its frank depiction of mental health, especially for those in the public eye, feels strikingly modern.”

Good Night, Oscar in London has an exceptional cast starring alongside Sean Hayes, including Rosalie Craig (Company), Daniel Adeosun (Much Ado About Nothing), David Burnett (The Duchess of Malfi), Richard Katz (The Fair Maid of the West), Eric Sirakian (The Kite Runner), Ben Rappaport (Grosse Pointe Garden Society), Tashinga Bepete (Dear England), Ben Butler (Twelfth Night), Charlotte Hunter (The Business of Murder), Max Roll (The Hills of California), and Ryan Speakman (A View From The Bridge).

What to watch for

  • While this play is fictional, it's based on real events, and some of Levant's quotes have been taken from his real-life TV appearances.
  • Doug Wright is the show's playwright; he's known for his Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play, I Am My Own Wife.
  • Throughout the duration of the show, Sean Hayes almost never leaves the stage; he showcases the depth of his acting abilities through a wide range of emotions, from hilarious jokes to emotional moments and even playing a portion of "Rhapsody in Blue" on stage.
  • In 1958, when this show was set, late-night television was still a very new concept. As EW's review explained, "the way the show moves from on camera to backstage and back, and the frenzy involved in getting Levant to just sit at a piano, has sitcom energy, but with the dark undertone of Levant's very public coming-undone."
