About Princess Essex - Globe

Don’t miss Princess Essex at the Globe Theatre. This show, based on a true story, is Anne Odeke’s Globe playwriting debut; she also stars in the one-woman production. Book Princess Essex tickets on TodayTix.

Princess Essex in London is a historical comedy based on the little-known story of Princess Dinubolu of Senegal. In 1908 she made history as the first black woman to enter a beauty pageant in the UK when she entered a pageant in Southend-on-Sea. Throughout the tale, audiences can expect to laugh, learn, celebrate authenticity, and have stereotypes challenged.

The play is led by a masterful creative team, including Robin Belfield (Twelfth Night) in his Globe directing debut. The show is designed by Hayley Grindle (Unbelievable), and the play is composed by Olivier Award-nominated Simon Slater (Constellations).

More information about Princess Essex - Globe

Princess Essex is a play commissioned by Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch. After its first performance on 12 November 2020, the play began touring in February 2022. Throughout the tour, audiences and critics loved the show.

One standout aspect of this play is the immense talent of Anne Odeke; as the only actor, she does a brilliant job telling the various parts of the story with humor.

A five-star review from Southend Theatre Scene said of Odeke, “Odeke’s one woman show takes us on an hour longjourney from 1908 to present day and is packed full of historic facts and re-enactments that are often hilarious, frequently shocking but consistently entertaining. There are lots of laugh out loud moments and Odeke certainly has comedy bones.”

What to watch for

  • Princess Essex isn’t Anne Odeke’s only historical show. Her musical, A Place For Me?, which is touring in 2024, is a family show about the Windrush community.
  • In 2023, a blue plaque was unveiled at Southend Victoria Station in honour of Princess Dinubolu. The plaque reads, “Princess Dinubolu arrived at this station in August 1908 on her way to Southend Kursaal. The first woman of colour known to have entered a British beauty pageant.”
  • Little is known about the real Princess Dinubolu, the basis of this play. There are newspaper reports from the pageant but no photos of her.
  • Thanks to funding from the Arts Council England, in partnership with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, The Mercury Theatre Colchester, and the South Essex African & Caribbean Association (SEACA), the play was able to tour in 2022.
