About The Picture of Dorian Gray

Succession’s Sarah Snook stars in one of the hottest London plays of the season: The Picture of Dorian Gray. Book The Picture of Dorian Gray tickets in London on TodayTix.

The Guardian called the show a “dizzyingly beautiful tour de force,” and Time Out declared it a “reinvention of theatre.”

Based on a classic piece of English literature, Oscar Wilde’s novel of the same name, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a stirring, explosive, and digital-forward production adapted and directed by Kip Williams, Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is an archetypal morality tale of a young man who purchases eternal youth at the expense of his soul after meeting Lord Henry, who explains that beauty and youth are fleeting. Dorian Gray embarks on a journey in which he doesn’t age, but a portrait of him does. Increasingly mad by the portrait’s maturation as his body remains gorgeous, but his life remains vacuous, Dorian Gray comes to regret his choice and takes acts to reverse it, propelling him to a bloody conclusion.

The Portrait of Dorian Gray has enjoyed multiple Australian runs; now, it comes to London with stage and screen star Sarah Snook in the lead role.

Technology firsts, Riveting, Must see, Masterful, Great acting

See it if You want to experience the different and NEW in theater, with an actress who is everything. And I am one of those tired of cameras on stage.

Don’t see it if You are fully wedded to traditional theater and don't have interest in anything beyond the traditional, or will be alarmed by huge screens.

See it if loved her acting, clever staging, very entertaining.

Don’t see it if a little bit overwhelming : felt like it could have been 30 minutes shorter but still worth the experience

Great staging, Great writing, Masterful, Must see, Resonant

See it if DONT MISS IT. This is a birth of a new type of theater and it was done brilliantly. Some compare it to Ivo van Hove's Network, it is NOT.

Don’t see it if Dont get the rows in the orchestra close to the stage. Ideally, row G and up. There are lots of projections and you wont appreciate sitting

More information about The Picture of Dorian Gray

Due to its haunting themes and universal look at ageing and beauty, The Picture of Dorian Gray has been popular since publishing in 1890. Over a century later, the tale has enjoyed various screen and stage adaptations, including a 1945 movie starring Hurd Hatfield, Angela Lansbury, Donna Reed, and George Sanders.

Kip Williams’ production stands out thanks to its singular theatricality: reenvisioning the story for a contemporary audience, this version of The Picture of Dorian Gray is a one-person show, a star vehicle in which its leading performer, Emmy Award nominee Sarah Snook, takes on over two dozen roles to tell this singular tale. The play invokes Kip Williams’ particular touch: digital technology and live camera work fuse art forms to make this a specifically twenty-first-century tale of self-obsession.

What to watch for

  • Sarah Snook is known for more than just Succession. She won a Golden Globe Award and earned nominations for three Primetime Emmy Awards for her work as conniving sister Shiv Roy on Succession, but she has also appeared in the films Sisters of War, Steve Jobs, Pieces of a Woman, and, at the Old Vic, The Master Builder.
  • Kip Williams’ integration of technology is a trademark touch. The director infuses camera feeds and other technology to highlight it as a vehicle for self-obsession and a mirror we can’t stop looking into.
  • In 2015, Williams won the Helpmann Award for Best Direction of a Play for his Sydney Theatre Company production of Suddenly Last Summer. Two years later, he won Best Direction at the 2017 Green Room Awards for Miss Julie, which also won Best Production and Best Digital Media Design and Integration. Most recently, he won the Sydney Theatre Award for Best Director in 2018 for STC’s The Harp in the South, the play also receiving the award for Best Production and Best New Australian Work.
