About FANGIRLS

Many of us have been a fangirl or fanboy at some point – and do we ever outgrow it entirely? This summer, the Lyric Hammersmith and Sonia Friedman Productions present the UK premiere of the musical Fangirls, with music, book, and lyrics by Australian writer Yve Blake. Book tickets on TodayTix now.

Our 14-year-old heroine Edna is a social misfit and in love with a boy called Harry. Harry, however, doesn’t know that Edna exists. Not due to anything as minor as them being in different classes at school, but because Harry is the star of True Connection, the most famous boy band in the world.

Edna is just one of millions of anonymous fans. Then it’s announced that the band will tour to her hometown of Sydney. What kind of wild scheme will she concoct so that her idol notices her?

Much more than a show about adolescent boy band fandom, Fangirls celebrates the timeless themes of friendship, feminism, and mental health, and how teenage girls should never be underestimated.

More information about FANGIRLS

Yve Blake is an Australian screenwriter, songwriter, and playwright. She attended London’s Central School of Speech and Drama and her play Sugar Sugar was developed as part of the Royal Court's Young Playwright's program. She began writing Fangirls in 2016 while a writer-in-residence at the Australian Theatre for Young People, after being awarded the inaugural Rebel Wilson Theatermaker Scholarship. Blake’s other plays include Lie Collector and Then.

In a four-star review, Guardian Australia called Fangirls “a show built for musical theatre’s most fiercely loyal, deeply invested audience: young people who need safe places to let their feelings fly free.” Fangirls won the 2019 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Mainstage Musical; the Matilda Award for Best Musical or Cabaret; the 2020 AWGIE Award for Music Theatre, and was recognised for New Australian Writing for Music theatre at the Green Room Awards in 2022.

The show is directed by Paige Rattray, who directed the original Australian production and is currently Director of New Work and Artistic Development at Sydney Theatre Company. Casting is to be announced.

What to watch for

  • In a TEDxSydney talk titled “For the Love of Fangirls”, also known as “Why Are Fangirls Scary?, Yve Blake explained that she was inspired to write the musical when Zayn Malik left the band One Direction and the media used pejorative language like “crazy” and “hysterical” to mock the fans’s reactions.
  • Blake carried out interviews with hundreds of teenage fangirls to collect inspiration for the show.
  • Other alumni of the Australian Theatre for Young People, where Blake started to develop Fangirls, include Nicole Kidman, Toni Collette, and Baz Luhrmann.
