More information about Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man and the Pool

In The Old Man and the Pool, as Birbiglia steps into the doctor's office, he receives a dose of intimidating news. First, it turns out his family has quite a heart problem history. Second, to dodge the hereditary bullet, he has to take two actions: eat healthier and exercise. But he isn’t thrilled about either option. The thought of clean eating sends boredom waves through his taste buds, and the mere mention of exercise, particularly swimming, unleashes a tidal wave of childhood pool trauma from a particular Massachusetts misadventure. He's stuck with nothing but deep thoughts about his own impending doom and hilarious findings about mortality.

This isn’t the first time the actor, storyteller, comedian Birbiglia has stepped onto a London stage for a one-man masterpiece. His award-winning show My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend’ ran at the Soho House for two weeks in 2012, marking his first performance in the capital. Now, he returns for a limited run at the Wyndham Theatre — so it’s definitely not one to miss!

What To Watch For

  • Birbiglia’s previous one-man shows, including The New One, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, and Sleepwalk with Me, have won various comedy awards. My Girlfriend's Boyfriend won the prestigious Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show, while his 2019 show The New One received both the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award. Multiple were also filmed for streaming on Netflix.
  • The Old Man and the Pool picks up where one of his other one-man shows, The New One, left off. Old Man speaks about adapting to middle age, whereas The New One followed Birbiglia’s struggles with new fatherhood.
  • His show Sleepwalk with Me became a television special, premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. That show portrays the difficulties of becoming a stand-up comedian, battling a REM sleep disorder, and navigating a stale relationship.
  • Birbiglia's expertise extends beyond one-man shows; He has also showcased his talents on screen in TV shows such as Orange is the New Black, Human Resources, and Billions, and films including The Fault in our Stars, Trainwreck, and A Man Called Otto.
