Rebecca Frecknall directs a ferocious revival of Tennessee Williams’s classic drama. After sell-out performances at the Almeida Theatre, the play returns for a limited seven-week run at the Phoenix Theatre.

Oscar nominee Paul Mescal makes his highly-anticipated West End debut as Stanley Kowalski, alongside Patsy Ferran as Blanche DuBois, and Anjana Vasan as Stella Kowalski.

A Streetcar Named Desire won Best Revival, with Paul Mescal and Anjana Vasan also winning Oliviers for their performances. Ferran, director Rebecca Frecknall, and lighting designer Lee Curran picking up Olivier nominations.

Blanche DuBois’s lost everything. She’s left with no choice but to visit her estranged sister Stella. In doing so, Blanche must confront a tragic past that threatens their future. What will happen with Stanley finds himself involved in lifelong issues?

Tell Me More

The New Orleans streets come alive in this spectacular adaptation, with the Evening Standard raving that “this wrenchingly sad, stark staging is the stuff theatrical myths are made of.”

A Streetcar Named Desire regularly crops up across London’s theatres. Gillian Anderson and Vanessa Kirby played the warring sisters in a 2014 Young Vic revival; Rachel Weisz and Ruth Wilson took on the twosome in a 2009 Donmar Warehouse revival; Trevor Nunn directed Glenn Close in 2002.

What to Watch For:

  • Paul Mescal plays Stanley. The Normal People actor earned an Oscar nomination for his turn in Aftersun.
  • The Olivier-winning actress Patsy Ferran plays Blanche. It’s her second turn in a Tennessee Williams play; she previously played Alma in Summer and Smoke. Rebecca Frecknall directs both A Streetcar Named Desire and Summer and Smoke.
  • When A Streetcar Named Desire opened on Broadway in 1947, audiences were so taken aback by the story, that a standing ovation lasted 30 minutes.
  • Every spring, the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival celebrates the lauded playwright. Visitors can take bespoke tours, including Galatoire’s restaurant, and the Hotel Maison de Ville.
