About Standing at the Sky's Edge

London Theatre raves about Standing at the Sky’s Edge saying: “from aching heartbreakers through to the mighty title number, this soul-stirring musical is a total triumph.”

Winner of the 2023 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, Standing at the Sky’s Edge is a kaleidoscopic portrait of life on an ever-changing estate, charting the highs and lows and loves and losses of three generations across six tumultuous decades on the iconic Park Hill estate.

In 1960, Rose and Harry are full of hope as they begin their exciting future in the newly constructed ‘streets in the sky’. Decades later, Liberian refugee Joy encounters the estate at its lowest ebb, but finds love with local boy Jimmy. In 2015, middle-class Poppy moves in to the fashionable redeveloped block, in search of a fresh start.

With award-winning music by legendary singer-songwriter Richard Hawley and a beautiful, hilarious and gut-wrenching book by Chris Bush, don’t miss your chance to experience this ‘deeply moving and monumental musical’ (Daily Telegraph) – performances must end 3 August.

See it if You want to see a moving play with musical interludes that has great singing and staging. Some of the nested storylines are very moving.

Don’t see it if You want to see a proper musical: the songs here aren’t really interlaid into the story and are more transitional between scenes. Some of —

See it if You want to see one of the most important shows of the decade presented on an epic scale.

Don’t see it if You think a musical has to tell everything in song. This is different, and if that's a problem, go elsewhere.

What to Watch For

  • The construction of Park Hill, a housing estate in Sheffield, took place between 1957 and 1961. It was granted Grade II listed building status in 1998, making it the largest listed building in Europe.
  • The musical takes its name, Standing At The Sky’s Edge, from the title track of Richard Hawley’s seventh studio album.
  • Ben Stones’ brutalist-inspired concrete set design includes a neon sign that reads, “I love you will u marry me”. These words were graffitied across a bridge linking two buildings on the Park Hill Estate and became an iconic permanent fixture.
