About The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Step into Narnia via the West End at The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Join the four Pevensie children as they discover a wider world that goes far beyond their wildest dreams in this fantasy play.

You may have read C. S. Lewis’s legendary Narnia tale as a child. But The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe play adds an extra sprinkle of theatre joy to bring mythical creatures like Aslan, the White Witch, and Mr. Tumnus to life. Whether you’re seeing the play in summer or in the winter months, every performance will feel like Christmas Day.

This production is a visual feast for the senses: cower beneath Aslan's mighty roar, or feel the bitter chill fall over the room as the White Witch makes her entrance. London Theatre gave The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe five stars, and praised the intimate qualities of a “magical, modern take on the Narnia story.”

The story still follows Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie as they’re evacuated to Aberdeenshire. While staying in their new home, Lucy discovers a new world that lies behind a wardrobe. Once Lucy convinces her siblings that Narnia exists, the foursome find themselves on an epic adventure to save the kingdom. Who will rule over Narnia: the White Witch, or the sons of Adam and the daughters of Eve?

All is good once you’ve seen the Narnia tale on stage.

Tell Me More

Be transported back to childhood or into a temporary state of wonder at the immersive and captivating theatre play in London. A cast of actor-musicians perform live music to give the show a folksy, calming quality. Plus, Toby Olié and Max Humphries's puppet direction and puppet design brings all the mythical characters to life. Quite simply, director Marianne Elliott and producer Chris Harper have delivered a production that is nothing short of magic.

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe premiered at Leeds Playhouse in 2017, and later played at the Bridge Theatre and on a national tour. Now, the Narnia play returns to London. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe runs at the Gillian Lynne Theatre for a limited engagement.

What to Watch For:

  • Samantha Womack plays the White Witch in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe play.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia series includes seven legendary books, but it wasn't the only magical realm created during the 1940s. J.R.R. Tolkien created The Lord of the Rings trilogy at the same time. In fact, the two men were friends and often met to work together in an informal writer's group near Oxford.
  • It took C.S. Lewis nearly ten years to write The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, from 1939-1949. The remaining six books of the series were completed and published in the subsequent seven years.
  • Where did C.S. Lewis seek inspiration for the titular parts of the story? The Lion character was a late addition to the plot of the story, the Witch is based on a Hans Christian Andersen story, The Snow Queen, and the Wardrobe may have been inspired by a piece of Lewis's furniture in his countryside home.
