The Glass Menagerie

Don't miss Amy Adams making her West End debut in the classic play.

About The Glass Menagerie

Six time Academy Award nominated actress Amy Adams makes her West End debut in a new production of Tennessee Williams's celebrated memory play, The Glass Menagerie directed by Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall Trilogy, People Places and Things,This House). Paul Hilton (The Inheritance, Lady Macbeth, A Very British Scandal), Tom Glynn-Carney (The Ferryman, Dunkirk), Lizzie Annis and Victor Alli complete the stellar cast.

Shattered by her husband’s abandonment, Amanda Wingfield’s steely focus remains locked on her future security and that of her children, Tom and Laura.  Her determination collides with her children’s dreams and ambitions. While Tom feels trapped by his life in St Louis, the pressure Amanda forces upon her daughter to secure her future is crushing both their relationship and Laura’s fragile self-esteem.

As attentions quickly turn to securing a suitor for Laura, the fine thread that connects dignity to desperation is pulled taut.

Tell Me More

Tennessee Williams is considered to be one of the greatest American playwrights of all time. Amy Adams is a leading Hollywood actress. So combining Tennessee Williams and Amy Adams is sure to create a moment of explosive theatre. Don’t miss Amy Adams making her West End debut in The Glass Menagerie. Adams plays Amanda Wingfield, who shares a St. Louis apartment with her children, Tom and Laura. Together, it’s almost as if they’re living in a pressure cooker. Tom is an aspiring poet trying to provide for his family. Laura suffering from polio makes day-to-day existence trickier than normal. Add into all of this that Amanda’s insistence to marry Laura off grows tiresome, and clearly there’s a few family issues that need unpacking. Told through Tom’s point of view, The Glass Menagerie is a memory play that explores how ambitions and dreams can be at loggerheads.

For over 70 years, The Glass Menagerie London productions have wowed audiences and critics alike, especially with its luxurious casting choices. Over the years, actresses including Helen Hayes, Cherry Jones and Deborah Findlay have played Amanda Wingfield. But this production is set to stand out, thanks to the six-time Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Adams making her play debut in The Glass Menagerie.

The Glass Menagerie play is the first show from a new production company — Second Half Productions. The creative team includes the Olivier Award-winning director Jeremy Herrin, who has made the decision to split the role of Tom in two. This visionary decision is sure to make The Glass Menagerie stand out, and it’s bound to be amplified by scenic design by Vicki Mortimer and lights by Paule Constable, bringing St. Louis to life.
