’One drink. And if you never want to see me again you never have to see me again.’

This summer Nick Payne’s beautiful and heartbreaking romance Constellations is revived in the West End with a twist: four different casts take turns to journey through the multiverse exploring the infinite possibilities of a relationship; each refracting the play afresh.

A quantum physicist and a beekeeper meet at a barbeque. They hit it off, or perhaps they don’t. They go home together, or maybe they go their separate ways. In the multiverse, with every possible future ahead of them, a love of honey could make all the difference.

Donmar Warehouse Artistic Director Michael Longhurst returns to direct his West End and Broadway hit. Winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and WhatsOnStage Award for Best Design.

More information about Constellations

What could Roland, a beekeeper and Marianne, a cosmologist have in common? They both love nature for a start. So when Roland and Marianne meet at a barbeque, it’s not just the food that’s sizzling. They go home together, or do they live a life apart from one another. Can multiple universes pull our lives in various directions? Nick Payne’s seminal play explores the conscious and unconscious decisions we make that change our relationships for the future.

The award-winning play Constellations is being revived at the Vaudeville Theatre this summer, and is directed by the Donmar Warehouse’s artistic director Michael Longhurst. Four different casts will perform Constellations on selected dates. Sheila Atim and Ivanno Jeremiah (18 June – 1 August), Peter Capaldi and Zoë Wanamaker (23 June – 24 July), Omari Douglas and Russell Tovey (30 July – 11 September), and Anna Maxwell Martin and Chris O’Dowd (6 August – 12 September).

What To Watch Out For

  • Nick Payne was inspired to write the play after watching a documentary about beekeeping and worrying about the rate at which bees are dying out.
  • Constellations premiered at the Royal Court in January 2012, starring Rafe Spall and Sally Hawkins.
  • Constellations then transferred to the Duke of York’s Theatre in November 2012.
  • Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson starred in the play’s Broadway premiere in 2015, which was also directed by Longhurst.
