About Cinderella The Musical

The much-anticipated World Premiere of ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’S CINDERELLA begins performances at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on 25 June, a new romantic musical comedy featuring an original story and book by 2021 OSCAR winner EMERALD FENNELL (Promising Young Women)and lyrics by Tony & Olivier award winner DAVID ZIPPEL (City of Angels). LAURENCE CONNOR (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, School of Rock) directs with choreography by JOANNE HUNTER.

Welcome to Bellville! The most aggressively picturesque town in the history of the world, populated exclusively with gorgeous townsfolk who stop at nothing to achieve perfection. Bellville is fairy tale come to life: a place where you can’t move without falling over a wishing well or a quivering milkmaid. Maintaining this façade is a full time job, and one that is taken very seriously indeed.

The only person steadfastly refusing to live in the fairy tale is Cinderella, loud-mouthed, dripping with disdain, and more likely to roast Hansel and Gretel for dinner than play the demure and downtrodden maid, Cinderella is desperate to escape. But underneath it all, the loneliness that comes with being the town pariah is wearing on her.

Not much is known about the synopsis of Cinderella, but audiences shouldn’t expect to see a prim and proper princess. Instead, the “Cinderella story” is turned on its head, reinventing everything you know about her. The musical stars Carrie Hope Fletcher in the titular role, reimagined as a fierce, independent woman who aims to remain true to herself. Victoria Hamilton-Barritt plays the Evil Stepmother, having portrayed the character in earlier workshops.

The Cinderella script is written by the BAFTA-winning Emerald Fennell, whose best-known works include Killing Eve, the hit BBC drama with plenty of twists and turns. We’re expecting a similar style from this musical, accompanied by a pop-rock score from the legend himself, Andrew Lloyd Webber. There’s also lyrics from David Zippel, whose lyricist credits include City of Angels and The Woman In White.

What to watch for

Workshop performances were staged at The Other Palace in 2019, starring Tyrone Huntley, Sophie Isaacs and Ruthie Henshall.

Cinderella writer Emerald Fennell stars in season 4 of Netflix’s The Crown.

Three tracks from Cinderella have been released so far: "Bad Cinderella", "Only You, Lonely You" and "I Know I Have a Heart".

Carrie Hope Fletcher has starred in West End productions including Les Miserables as Fantine and Veronica Sawyer in Heathers.

Cinderella is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s newest musical, following School of Rock.
