About Indecent Proposal

Everyone has their price, Jonny. I think a million dollars is yours.”

Atlantic City. 1988. Jonny and Rebecca are very much in love and very much in debt. He’s a struggling singer-songwriter who spends most of his time playing backup for Annie at the Oasis Casino Hotel Resort, and she works part-time at the casino and for a local charity. They struggle to make ends meet but they’re happy and that’s enough.

Or is it?

When wealthy stranger Larry Harris arrives in town and offers Rebecca a million dollars to spend a night with him, will the lure of money outweigh the promise of fidelity? Will Rebecca accept Larry’s indecent proposal? Will her marriage survive if she doesn’t? Will Jonny stick around if she does?

Inspired by the Jack Engelhard book which sparked a world-wide debate and was later adapted into the 1993 hit film, Indecent Proposal is a chamber musical that stays true to book’s setting of Atlantic City in the 1980s whilst reimagining the work through the lens of the current social and political climate, allowing audiences to consider what they would do in a similar situation, whilst they watch this couple grapple with the fallout from a stranger’s proposition.

Directed by Charlotte Westenra, is has book and lyrics by Michael Conley, music by Dylan Schlosberg and stars Ako Mitchell as Larry, Jacqui Dankworth as Annie and Norman Bowman as Jonny. Further cast to be announced.

More information about Indecent Proposal

Would you sleep with a stranger for a million dollars? It’s an offer that almost seems too good to be true, but when someone pops the question at a casino in Atlantic City, and you’re struggling to get by, it seems passable to consider it.

At the start of Indecent Proposal, we meet Jonny and Rebecca, a loved up couple who don’t have much money between them. They’ve spent years away from the limelight, simply getting by. But, when a wealthy stranger, Larry, offers Rebecca the chance to have a million dollars for simply sleeping with him, her prayers are answered. Or are they? Struggling to decide, Rebecca has to weigh up what’s more important to her — money or her marriage.

When the Indecent Proposal story was first published in the eighties, readers couldn’t quite believe the storyline. Its film adaptation just a few years later shocked audiences too, and it’s deemed a far-fetched, idealistic interpretation of love. Even so, the Indecent Proposal story is set to translate well into musical theatre, making its world premiere.

The Indecent Proposal musical will reassess the storyline in line with today’s societal and political climate. There’s also an original score too, but the core essence of Indecent Proposal remains the same.

What to Watch For

  • Even though Indecent Proposal may be best known as a nineties film, the original story was told in a book. Jack Engelhard’s book, Indecent Proposal, which was published in 1988 follows a couple’s rocky relationship being affected by a stranger. The French writer has penned other novels too, including Compulsive (2013) and News Anchor Sweetheart (2016).
  • The 1993 film Indecent Proposal starred Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson. Indecent Proposal was deemed a controversial movie due to its subject topic, but still enjoyed box office success.
  • The Indecent Proposal musical was originally due to open at Southwark Playhouse in 2020. The show was postponed by a year due to the pandemic.
  • Indecent Proposal music in the film includes songs by Seal, The Pretenders and Bryan Ferry. Its lead single is “All The Right Places” by Lisa Stansfield.
