As the 101 Dalmatians musical is based on the Dodie Smith novel and inspired by subsequent films, you may already know the storyline. 101 Dalmatians sees cutthroat fashionista Cruella de Vil on her quest to create the latest must-have item — a Dalmatian fur coat. She won’t rest until she’s caught the puppies for herself, but it’s tricky to capture Pongi, Perdi and the other dogs in the litter. How many dalmatians will be rescued? Or will it be too late?

See the 101 Dalmatians dogs come to life in Regent’s Park this summer. It’s bound to be a magical musical.

What to Watch For:

  • There won’t actually be 101 dalmatians on stage at the same time. Instead, the animal characters will be animated through state-of-the-art puppetry. Life of Pi recently won the Olivier for Best Supporting Actor for the seven actors that play the tiger. Could the dogs in 101 Dalmatians be just as spectacular?
  • It’s taken a while for the 101 Dalmatians musical to hit the stage. 101 Dalmatians was first scheduled to play at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2020 and 2021. Now it’s finally hear to make its (paw)-print in London.
  • Before the 101 Dalmatians films, it was originally a book. Dodie Smith’s 1956 childrens novel, The Hundred and One Dalmatians, follows the kidnapping of a family of Dalmatian puppies.
  • The first 101 Dalmatians film was released in 1961. It was the 17th animated Disney film. To date, there’s 60 Disney animated films — the latest was Encanto in 2021.
  • Glenn Close played Cruella de Vil in the 1996 101 Dalmatians film. For the stage production, Kate Fleetwood will play the London heiress.
