It may be time for giants of stage satire the likes of David Hare and Tom Stoppard to make room for the next biting voice of this generation, Joshua Harmon. His debut play “Bad Jews” achieved critical success in the West End, and his latest offering “Admissions” dissects one of the hottest button topics of the day – diversity quotas in university admissions. The play follows a white male student who is disgruntled about not getting into Yale, while his friend, who’s mixed race, was accepted. Alex Kingston, best known for her role as River Song in “Doctor Who,” plays his mother as well as the prevailing flagship for liberal hypocrisy.
“Admissions” is premised on the juicy irony that the issue of “white privilege” is most prevalently a concern of those who are white and privileged. Harmon hilariously upends the good intentions behind this quality of modern liberal elitists. In doing so, the thoughtful comedy drives home the point that despite all of their intellectual virtues, the white privileged crowd are inherently unable to appreciate the real-world consequences of their social power.
What to watch for
“Admissions” premiered off Broadway in New York starring Jessica Hecht. The critically lauded production earned the 2018 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and the Drama Desk Award for Best Play.
Although she is most known for her recurring role as River Song on the BBC’s long-running television phenomenon “Doctor Who,” Alex Kingston originally trained for the stage. She studied at the Royal Academy of Drama and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company early in her career.
During the 2016 U.S. Presidential campaign, Harmon adapted a version of the Greek classic “Medea” and called it “Ivanka.” The lesser-known work was meant to be a biting send-up of the rise of Trump.
