About Little Miss Sunshine

Based on the Oscar-winning film, Little Miss Sunshine is a new musical comedy from Tony Award-winners James Lapine (Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George) and William Finn (Falsettos, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee).

The Hoover family has more than a few troubles, but young Olive has her heart set on winning the Little Miss Sunshine beauty contest. When an invitation to compete comes out of the blue, the Hoovers must pile in to their rickety yellow camper van. Can it survive the 800-mile trip from New Mexico to California – and more importantly, can they?

This uplifting, modern classic celebrates the quirks of every family, the potholes in every road, and the power of overcoming our differences.

Lapine and Finn’s inventive musical version opens in London in a brand new production directed by Arcola Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen, then takes to the road for a national tour.

More information about Little Miss Sunshine

This new musical-comedy is based on the 2006 Oscar-winning film “Little Miss Sunshine,” which follows a dysfunctional family’s journey in an old rickety VW campervan from New Mexico to California for their daughter Olive’s beauty pageant. Olive is bright-eyed and excited about the trip, but her dad is worried about his latest business venture; Grandpa can’t stop saying inappropriate things; her brother won’t speak; and her mom is freaking out enough for everyone.

With a book by Tony Award winner James Lapine (“Into the Woods,”Sunday in the Park With George”), music by William Finn (“Falsettos,” “A New Brain”), and direction by Mehmet Ergen, “Little Miss Sunshine” is playing ath the Arcola Theatre. Time Out called the show “terrifically – often filthily – funny,” and Newsday described the U.S. production as “A road trip quite unlike any other you’ve seen on stage” and “An ingenious invention that honours the hit movie.”

What to watch for

The idea for the “Little Miss Sunshine” screenplay originally came from an Arnold Schwarzenegger speech in which he’d said: “If there’s one thing in this world that I hate, it’s losers, I despise them.”

“Little Miss Sunshine” won 72 awards including an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and a BAFTA for Best Screenplay.

The play was originally workshopped at the Sundance Institute and premiered in the U.S. off Broadway at Second Stage Theater in 2011.
