About The Who's Tommy

In honor of the musical’s 30th anniversary, the Goodman Theatre is producing a revival of The Who’s Tommy. The rock opera musical features some of the band’s most beloved songs like “See Me, Feel Me,” “Sensation” and, of course, “Pinball Wizard,” transporting audiences back to a simpler time of skee-ball and the ding of arcade cabinets.

The album, written by The Who's Pete Townshend, was released in 1969. The album inspired a 1975 film, and the stage musical The Who’s Tommy, with book and lyrics by Townshend, premiered on Broadway in 1993 and won five Tony Awards.

The musical follows a young man named Tommy Walker who tries to escape the pains of real life with the soothing sound of pinballs whirling. As he becomes a popular pinball aficionado, he loses sight of what and who matters to him. Inspired by The Who’s album “Tommy,” this musical’s familiar tunes envelope audiences into a familiar embrace. Get your tickets to The Who's Tommy on TodayTix.

More information about The Who's Tommy

The Goodman Theatre’s production of The Who’s Tommy is a star-studded event. With Broadway veterans leading the cast, the revival is as close to Broadway-level as possible without being in New York City. In the role of Tommy is Ali Louis Bourzgui, whose credits include Layalina at the Goodman Theatre and the national Broadway tour of The Band’s Visit. The cast also features Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), Bobby Conte (Company), and Christina Sajous (Spongebob the Musical).

Director Des McAnuff, who directed the Broadway production of The Who’s Tommy, leads the show at the Goodman Theatre. Not only does McAnuff lend his directorial talents to the show, but he also co-wrote the book with Townshend.

To celebrate the gaming focus of the show, the Goodman Theatre has a pop-up pinball arcade for audiences to enjoy starting 90 minutes before and an hour after most performances. The audience member with the highest score on the “Tommy” machine at the end of the production run will win a custom Fender Stratocaster signed by Pete Townshend.

What to Watch For

  • The Goodman Theatre's revival of The Who’s Tommy has a set designed by David Korins, a renowned Broadway set designer known for his work on shows like Hamilton, Beetlejuice, and Dear Evan Hansen, just to name a few.
  • Music experts consider “Tommy” the first narrative concept album. It was wildly successful and sold over 20 million copies.
  • Not only was "Tommy" considered the first narrative album, but some music experts also believe it to be the first actual rock opera. This album made way for other rock operas to follow, like Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Evita.
