Salem is almost 400 years old, making it one of the oldest cities in the US. It has a vast and varied history. Its humble beginnings are as a fishing community, but it develops as a key metropolis and was the state capital for a brief period. You will see sites that relate to the 1692 witchcraft trials and hear the compelling stories that shook the town to the core. There are also locations that have incredible importance to the American Revolution. And the seaport was the richest in America per capita from 1790 until the War of 1812. Ships traversed the oceans to bring back goods from all over the world. While the heydey ended in the early 1800s, the seaport continued to thrive until its end in the 1870s.
