Swept Away debuted at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California, another venue known for its adventurous storytelling. Now, the hot ticket makes its East Coast premiere in Washington D.C., and with strong buzz, the production may be bound for Broadway, which means you get to see it before it reaches wider audiences in New York.
The creative team is first-rate. In addition to music and lyrics by The Avett Brothers, “America’s biggest roots band” (Rolling Stone), the show’s book is by Tony Award-winning stage and screenwriter John Logan, whose onstage credits include Moulin Rouge! and films include Red, Skyfall, and Gladiator. Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer, known for Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and American Idiot, will direct.

In Swept Away, head back to 1888, off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts. When a violent storm sinks a whaling ship, four surviving souls — a young man in search of adventure, his big brother who has sworn to protect him, a captain at the end of a long career at sea, and a worldly first mate who has fallen from grace — each face a reckoning. How far will they go to stay alive? And can they live with the consequences? Don’t miss this electrifying, soul-stirring exploration of how facing tragedy can open the door to forgiveness.
Fans of The Avett Brothers, the band behind such hits as “Murder in the City,” “If It’s the Beaches,” and “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise,” will make this a must-see to hear the song sung by a top-notch cast. Get ready for a nautical journey like no other.
