About School of Rock

SCHOOL OF ROCK is a new musical based on the Paramount film written by Mike White.

The musical follows Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. Disinterested in academics, Dewey creates his own curriculum, turning his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band.

Producer Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed 14 new songs to create a score also featuring original songs from the movie. With its sensational live kids’ rock band, SCHOOL OF ROCK is a testimony to the transforming power of music. May the spirit of rock be with you!

More information about School of Rock

Dewey Finn is down on his luck. His bandmates kick him out of the group before the Battle of the Bands, and his best friend Ned and his girlfriend Patty give him 30 days to come up with rent money. So he does what any lazy loser would do: He steals his friend’s substitute teaching gig and masquerades as an educator at the prestigious private school Horace Green. While Dewey, or “Mr. Schneebly,” resists the school’s rigid rules, he discovers his students’ musical talent and spies a way to reach the young people, a way to make rent, and a way to get back at his ex-friends — by entering the Battle of the Bands.

This underdog story brings out the softy in everyone, as watching this lovable loser find his calling and his passion proves that anyone can follow their dreams. Based on the 2003 Richard Linklater film, the musical has a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Glenn Slater and a book by “Downton Abbey’s” Julian Fellowes. “Entertainment Weekly” called the musical “an inspiring jolt of energy,” and “The New York Times” gave the “Critic’s Pick” seal of approval. So if you wanna be the teacher’s pet, well baby, you just better make your way to the Winter Garden Theater.

Recommended for ages 8 and up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

What to watch for

The musical’s score includes the original songs that were in the movie, including “School of Rock (Teacher’s Pet)” and “Math Is a Wonderful Thing.”

There is a real School of Rock, which existed even before the movie, and which boasts locations around the world. The musical did some recruiting for child musician/actors through the school.

The musical premiered on Broadway before opening in the West End a year later. Andrew Lloyd Webber hasn’t opened a musical in New York before London since “Jesus Christ Superstar” in 1971. Lloyd Webber said the show started in New York because the U.S. rules for child performers are more lax.

The moment where the type-A student Summer Hathaway belts out “Memory” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” originated in the movie, and the transition to stage makes it a fun, inside nod to the composer.
