With its world premiere at The Retro Dome in October of 2012, Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show became an instant hit. Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show won multiple awards from BroadwayWorld San Francisco and was voted Stand-out New Work by Silicon Valley Small Venue Theatre Awards.
This musical focuses on a fictional game show struggling for air-time on television. Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show doesn’t shy away from addressing the shifting roles for women during the era or poking fun at the 1950s quiz show scandals. Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show is a musical co-created by Shannon, Scott, and Stephen Guggenheim. Complete with original music that pays tribute to the tunes of your favorite game shows,Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show brings audiences into the exciting world of classic television! Unpredictable audience participation adds a realistic twist that keeps everyone on their toes.
Guggenheim Entertainment’s team brought the musical to life. Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show is conceived, produced, and directed by Scott Guggenheim with book, lyrics, and choreography by Shannon Guggenheim and musical direction by Stephen Guggenheim. Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show sits among other original Guggenheim Entertainment productions, including The MeshugaNutcraker! and Santastic. Guggenheim Entertainment has produced the revival of Schoolhouse Rock Live! and Xanadu’s first post-Broadway run. The Game Show Show’s small cast stars creators Stephen Guggenheim and Shannon Guggenheim.
The Retro Dome, Guggenheim Entertainment’s theatre, closed following the production of Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show in January 2013. Since then, the theatre company has found its new home at 3Below Theaters, which opened in 2018. Guggenheim Entertainment was behind the redevelopment of the Camera 3 Cinemas, which are now 3Below Theaters & Café. 3Below Theaters connects Guggenheim Entertainment with San Jose Playhouse, Cinequest, and ComedySportz.
What to Watch For
- Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show’s creative team is family-based. Husband and wife duo Scott and Shannon Guggenheim work with Scott’s brother Stephen Guggenheim.
- Guggenheim Entertainment enlisted the help of the public to createThanks for Playing! The Game Show Show. The theatre company started a successful fundraising campaign. They raised $50,000 to get Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show off the ground. Scott, Shannon, and Stephen Guggenheim all waived their writer, director, choreographer, and musical director fees in an effort to enable the musical to take the stage.
- The audience participation component is a unique aspect of Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show. This musical’s audience serves as the show’s studio audience. For each performance, five audience members are selected to go onstage and play the show’s game, “The Secret Square.” There are also plenty of sing-along opportunities throughout the show.
- Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show nods its head to a handful of classic game show favorites. Match Game, The Price is Right, Beat the Clock, Queen for a Day, I’ve Got a Secret, and What’s My Line? are among the list of game shows that audiences are bound to recognize!
