More information about Les Misérables

Les Misérables originally took the stage in Paris in 1980. British theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company to adapt the French musical to English, and the English-language version of Les Misérables opened at the Barbican Centre in London in 1985. After 19 years on the West End at Palace Theatre, the production moved to the Sondheim Theatre and continues to run today.

The musical’s success led to its opening Broadway production in 1987. Les Misérables won eight Tony Awards that year, including Best Book, Best Musical, and Best Original Score. Since then, Les Misérables has had two Broadway revivals, in 2006 and 2014. The musical has been produced in 22 languages and performed in 53 countries worldwide.

In 2012, the celebrated musical was adapted into a film starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russell Crowe. Directed by Tom Hooper, the film Les Misérables won three Academy Awards.

What to Watch For

  • Les Misérables is considered a sung-through musical. The entirety or close to all of the dialogue is sung rather than spoken by the actors. This includes conversations between characters as well as their speeches. Other examples of sung-through musicals include Hamilton and Cats.
  • The protests featured in Les Misérables are based on the June Rebellion in 1832 Paris. Often mistaken for the infamous French Revolution, the rebellion occurred 43 years later. Although the Paris uprisings themselves were unsuccessful, Hugo’s novel has immortalized the cries of oppressed Parisians.
  • The original Les Misérables London production in 1987 received negative reviews from critics. However, the public embraced the musical, and the show repeatedly sold-out performances. Eventually, the critics changed their tune and showered the musical with awards.
  • For the 25th anniversary of the London opening, the musical was celebrated with a concert at the O2 Arena in London in 2010. The cast of Les Misérables in Concert: The 25th Anniversary consisted of several original West End production members as well as celebrities like Nick Jonas and Matt Lucas.
