Berkeley Repertory Theatre is the East Bay's first resident professional theatre, founded in 1968 by Michael Leibert. The company presents modern classics, recent hits, and West Coast and world premieres at its two stages. The second, a 600-seat theatre, was added in 2001 next to its existing 400-seat theatre. Notable shows like The Laramie Project, American Idiot, and Ain't Too Proud have all been featured there, but even before all those recent productions, Berkeley Rep won the 1997 Regional Theatre Tony Award for its excellence.
