About Dvořák’s “New World”
Los Angeles Opera’s new Music Director, Domingo Hindoyan, leads Dvořák’s beloved and enduring Symphony No. 9. Bristling with spiritual- and folk-inspired melodies, the “New World” Symphony evokes the nostalgia of a distinct American landscape seen through immigrant eyes. At the 2025 Proms, Hindoyan showed a rare gift for Dvořák’s Ninth: “Rarely has the slow movement opened with such a velvety hymnal quality…its tension stunningly held; never has the Scherzo sounded so genuinely wildly, primitively whirling.” (Bachtrack)
Hindoyan gives the world premiere of Venezuelan Chilean composer Miguel Farías’ Mistralianas, which pays homage to the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral. Mistral was the first Latin American author to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and her poetry and legacy is brought to life with the help of soprano Sonya Yoncheva.
The evening starts with the raw, theatrical energy of Medea's Dance of Vengeance. Taken from the ballet Samuel Barber wrote for Martha Graham, The Cave of the Heart, the Dance depicts Medea driven to murderous rage by her husband, capturing not her actions but emotions in a psychological thriller of a piece.
