Yi-Wen Jiang’s string quartet arrangements of popular Chinese folk melodies are at the heart of our celebration of the Year of the Horse—a symbol of independence, growth, and free spiritedness in Chinese culture. A dynamic scene of whinnying, galloping equines comes to life as the cello and piano take on an arrangement of Haihuai Huang’s Racing Horses—another folk song originally written for the erhu, a traditional two-stringed instrument from China.
Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic ramp up the evening with Dai Wei’s “playful,” “hushed,” and “agitated” pieces for strings as well as a Mozart quartet cherished for its upbeat energy and creative emphasis on the warm-toned cello.
