The People vs. Lenny Bruce, a LIVE staged reading based on the real obscenity trial of famed stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce, based on the 1964 court case of Martin Garbus. This dramatic adaptation is by playwright Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis. The staged reading will be followed by a Q&A with the cast, the playwright and the legendary attorney Martin Garbus.
Garry Marshall Theatre is the perfect place for this reading as Garry himself was greatly influenced by Lenny Bruce and, on occasion played the drums in the nightclub behind Lenny Bruce during his set. In a 1991 interview Garry had with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, he said: “A great influence on me was Lenny Bruce, who really, you couldn’t write for, but you could kind of pitch…his formula was very clear, which was pain plus time equals humor.”
