More information about Beautiful - The Carole King Musical

Beautiful takes audiences on a nostalgic journey through the life and career of the legendary singer-songwriter Carole King. Set against the backdrop of the 1960s music scene, the show follows Carole's remarkable transformation from a shy Brooklyn teenager to a chart-topping sensation.

The world premiere opened in October 2013 in San Francisco, California. Shortly after, Beautiful premiered on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on January 12, 2014. Marc Bruni directed the Broadway production, with Josh Prince choreographing the performance. In 2014, Beautiful received Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Sound Design and three Drama Desk Awards. The Broadway production closed after six years with a total of 2,416 performances on October 27, 2019.

Beautiful won a Grammy in 2015 for Best Musical Theatre Album. The musical features many of King’s most notable songs, including “You Make Me Feel Like (A Natural Woman),” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “The Locomotion,” and countless more!

Originally cast as an understudy for Carole King on Broadway, Sara Sheperd stars in the leading role of the North American tour. Sheperd is joined by Adam Dietlein, who plays King’s songwriting partner and husband Gerry Goffin. Dietlein, also initially a Broadway understudy for Goffin, now finds himself in the starring role alongside Sheperd.

What to Watch For

  • Prior to Beautiful, there had been two other attempts to tell King’s story on Broadway. A private person, King struggled to share her story through a musical remake. The first performance of Beautiful she attended was three months after it opened on Broadway. King went on stage following the show and praised the musical.
  • The song “1650 Broadway Medley” encapsulates the music scene Carole King entered as a songwriter. Featuring six hit songs of the time, including “Love Potion Number 9,” “Splish Splash,” and “Yakety Yak,” the song was meant to capture a walk down a hallway in the Brill Building. Known for being the home of the pop music industry in the 1960s, the Brill Building was headquartered at 1650 Broadway.
  • Carole King made a special surprise appearance to celebrate Beautiful fifth anniversary on Broadway. The star came on stage as herself and performed a live piano rendition of “Beautiful,” the musical’s closing song.
  • Carole King suggested the title Beautiful for the musical after seeing a run-through performance. The title shares the name of her song “Beautiful,” which was released in her 1971 album “Tapestry.” In 1972, “Tapestry” won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
